second memory gathering

For our second round of memory collection, we initially planned to conduct it at Southwark Walworth Library, but since obtaining permission took longer than expected, we didn’t want to lose time. so at the same time, we reached out to the LCC Library manager and quickly secured approval to continue our research there.

Building on our previous findings and based on research on effective survey questions, we adjusted our prompt to “Share an unforgettable memory about Elephant & Castle", allowing for more personal and meaningful responses. This adaptation helped us gather richer narratives while keeping the project moving forward.

gather inspIrations

We’re gathering ideas to spark new possibilities. A key inspiration is the community quilt artifact, a collective memory of COVID built around the prompt, "What got us through lockdown?" Though each story is unique, together they form a shared history.

Now, we’re exploring how to translate this concept into a new format and material, capturing both personal and collective experiences in a meaningful way.

aim & vision

One key point from the brief—and something highlighted by the library manager—was the idea of non-computational urban intelligence. After researching and reflecting on this concept, we began to consider how our project could be more inclusive and accessible to a broader audience, especially in ways that don’t rely on digital technology.

Following many discussions, we decided to create a system that allows the community to interact with and revisit collective memories on their own. Our goal is to design an installation that functions like a monthly memory "safe", where people can engage with shared experiences independently, without needing us to be present. This approach invites ongoing reflection and fosters a sense of ownership within the community.

Envisioning Outcomes

Create a flexible memory archive system, similar to the Rolling Memory Archive, that can be implemented in different locations like schools and libraries.
